The truth and the lies surrounding this thing bongo
gospel.
On Friday of 06th 03 2015, I updated a post on my facebook account that read like “this issue of Kenyan boys waking up from their dreams to tell the world about their bongo gospel songs should be wise. Bongo is tanzania while gospel is the word of God. Choose wisely, either sing bongo or sing gospel” …. The post generated a lot of mixed reactions from different persons as they gave their personal opinions and views on the whole aspect of bongo gospel. some seemed to defend the whole bunch of singers who are currently trending with the bongo gospel swag while a majority distanced themselves from this bongo thing refuting claims that its good and opting to preach the gospel through music that is not divided on the aspect of whichever genre. lets get down to the main business .
What is bongo gospel?
Bongo gospel is a trending style of music (you can call it genre) that is being used in Kenya mostly by the new breed/crop of the gospel musicians whether born again or not who believe that copy pasting what willy paul and bahati are doing ) is the only way to go. Personally the first time I heard about the bongo gospel outbreak rumors was after the release of sitolia by willy paul and Gloria muliro during one of willy pauls radio interviews. Bongo for those who don’t know is a style of music (genre) that originates from our neighboring country Tanzania. The word bongo comes the Swahili ubongo that means brain (mind). Tanzanians are the brain child of bongo flavor style of music just like the way we have genge and kapuka in kenya.
Now after the release of sitolia and subsequent hits then
came wangu by bahati and his big hits
the gospel industry /ministry in Kenya took a totally different approach and everyone was now into the new trend in
town that is bongo gospel . beats were produced and songs were released ,
songs that you could not tell anything
about them content wise even after listening to them for about ten times a day.the
artistes drafted lyrics that sound the same, beats that sound
the same accent that is so confused and
lacks its origin and as we speak the
condition/situation is ridiculous and utter pathetic. So in a nutshell, bongo
gospel as it is being said is a style (genre) of music that is being used by
Kenyan artistes with beats that mimic
the Tanzanian bongo flavor music instrumentals.
So what’s wrong about this bongo gospel craze!
This is where it all ends and begins at the same time, music genre whether doing secular or gospel is the most basic fundamental of each musicians career. In gospel music genre seems to cause a lot of debate as to whether one has to use them or not but as far as music is concerned one has to identify their own style (genre) of music because that’s where their potential lies career wise. Now back to our bongo gospel issue.
This bongo gospel thing (trend) poses a huge threat to our
gospel musicians and is already causing more harm than good to the gospel music
fraternity at the moment. And it is so unfortunate that the new crop of
gospel artistes seem to be heading to
that direction oblivious of what its all about and whether it is necessary.
Bongo gospel which is majorly being used
by male artistes seems to threaten the
gospel ministry because preaching has been abandoned. My fellow brothers and
fellow ministers have forgotten their purpose of doing gospel music and now
they all got a new fake irrelevant purpose and that is to sound bongoish. The intention has shifted from preaching gospel through their music to who is sounding more bongo than who. Its evident and you can tell it all from their
lyrics because they have betrayed them all. To my fellow artistes the focus is
so much into the bongo flavor thing that
they have forgotten and neglected and abandoned
their ministerial calling that is to preach the word of God to being the
next bongo gospel artiste in town. There is nothing new, no new ideas and nothing in their songs that can inspire,
transform or even minister to a soul leave alone challenging someone to give
their lives to Jesus. instead what we get or hear is the misuse and over recycling of some Swahili terms like Zingua, Mlofa , Msela, and other which you can tell are swahili or french .the
Swahili names Maulana , Rabana , Rabuka, Jalali, Mola and others
which refer to God seem to make
90%. Of their content. Listen to such a song and you will totally be brain
washed.
This is happening because the young lads seem to copy paste and ape
what willy paul and bahati are singing and doing not forgetting that the role
models of these two boys hail from Tanzania and are secular artistes to say the
least. Everything about willy paul and
bahati is being copied, from what they sing to what they sound, what they dress
to the photographic posses they do. These young lads seem to be forgetting that
willy and bahati are living their lives, and
that in as much as they can admire them, there is no way they can be
like them or be like them . there will
always be one bahati and one wiily paul.
I mean you should get time and listen to some of these
songs. You will wonder what is happening and how you can help these young boys
get out of this trap.
Just the other day, I was listening to my radio when a song
of a certain artiste was played . Talk of voice bahati, lyrics bahati to make
matters more than worse, the boy was pronouncing words just like bahati. Using
r instead of l –jarari instead of Jalali, mora instead of mola, mrofa instead of mlofa e.t.c I
was not shocked instead I pity the boy. The most surprising thing is that everybody
is waking up straight forward heading to the bongo gospel direction. Bongo gospel is like a tsunami.
Its swinging all gospel new born babies
to one direction but the consequences of it are far from the end.
What must be done…
These breed of bongo gospel artistes need to be told the naked truth. They need to be told and informed of the dangers and harm they are doing to themselves, young boys get the mentality of this bongo thing. Get your mind from thinking that doing bongo gospel will make you famous or your musical career successful. Shift your focus from bongo gospel and instead focus on the word of God. It’s God who opens doors and not bongo gospel. It’s God that will make you successful and not bongo gospel. Do gospel music content wise, drawing inspiration from the word of God and what God speaks unto your heart and God will do the rest.
keep the focus..

Great bro....nice post. let ppl decide. Either God or Bongo.
ReplyDelete#Nel sure bro. Its just a matter of decision making. But let everybody be guided by Gods holy spirit when making an informed decision
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input
In fullness of time the underline word is WORSHIP DONE IN TRUTH AND SPIRIT IS WHAT GOD WANTS. Too much of secularism has taken a great toll on the genre mentioned, like i have always said, music is spiritual and you will either dance it to hell or sing it to heaven.Let everybody know that the majority don't make a right sometimes.... to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is peace and life!
ReplyDeleteCol 3:16 says Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness ...#SPIRITUALSONGS
